Contents:
1951 Educational Statistics (age at termination of education) in Scotland
Approx. number of rows:
148
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. The data are taken from table 17, 'Occupied Population classified according to 11 terminal educational ages, (a) Scotland by 9 age sections and (b) Administrative, etc. Areas by All Ages' (pp.652) for (a) Nation and (b) Divisions, Cities, Counties and Large Burghs in the Occupations and Industries volume of the 1951 census reports.

Notes:

  1. These data are from a 10% sample of all households.
  2. The table provides data for the following kinds of area, as defined in the sco_Type column:
    • Nation (1 area): National total. See below for additional breakdown by age group.
    • County (33 areas): Include Burghs but exclude Cities.
    • City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • Burgh (20 areas): Large Burghs only.
    • Conurb (1 area): Central Clydeside.
    • Region (5 areas): Northern, East Central, West Central, Southern and 'Crofting Counties'.
  3. These data cover both sexes, with two rows for each unit distinguished by the 'sex' column with values 'M' and 'F'.
  4. The national totals for Scotland are broken down not only by gender but also by age group, using the following age ranges as defined in the age_group column: 'UNDER 20', '20-24', '25-29', '30-34', '35-44', '45-54', '55-64', '65-74', '75 AND OVER', 'NOT STATED' and 'ALL AGES'.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked to ensure that the individual terminal ages summed to the total for all terminal ages (see constraint below).
  2. The geographical units were cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other datasets. This excludes the regions which have no g_unit value.
