Social Class and Socio-Economic Groups

The first census report to actually tabulate social class, by Local Government District, was 1951. However, data from the 1931 census was used to create a tabulation of social class in the 1921-30 Decennial Supplement, and it is possible to estimate social class statistics for earlier dates from occupational data. The 1961 census introduced a new system of 'Socio-Economic Groups', defined more broadly; the 1971 census tabulated both these and the earlier Social Classes.
