In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Llantarnam like this:
Llantarnam, ry. sta., Monmouthshire, in SW. of co., 2½ m. N. of Newport; in vicinity is the seat of Llantarnam Abbey. See LLANVIHANGEL-LLANTARNAM.
