Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Coalbrookdale

Coalbrookdale, dist., vil., and seat with ry. sta., Dawley and Madeley pars., S. Shropshire, 11 miles SE. of Shrewsbury and 161 miles NW. of London, pop. 1707; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. The dist. or dale is 8 miles long and 2 miles broad, extending along the bank of the Severn from Newport to Broseley. It yields iron and coal, as well as limestone, in great quantities, and is studded with forges, mills, and furnaces.
