In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pen Llin like this:
PENLLINE, a parish in Bridgend district, Glamorgan; 2 miles W N W of Cowbridge r. station. It has a post-office under Cowbridge. Acres, 1, 784. Real property, £2, 384. Pop., 286. Houses, 74. P. Castle stands on an eminence; belonged to successively the Turbervilles, the Stradlings, and the Mansels; is now the seat of J. Homfray, Esq.; and retains some Norman features. The living is a p. curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Llanfrinach, in the diocese of Llandaff. The church is old.
