In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Charlestown like this:

Charlestown, or Newtown-Dillon, vil., Kilbeagh par., E. co. Mayo, 10 miles NW. of Ballaghaderreen ry. sta., pop. 778; P.O.; 1 Bank.
