In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Chicksgrove like this:
CHICKSGROVE, a tything in East Tisbury and Wardour parishes, Wilts; 4¼ miles ESE of Hindon. Real property, with Tisbury, Hatch, and Staple, £1, 888. Sir J. Davis, born in 1570, Was a native. Gassen farm-house here belonged to Shaftsbury Abbey, and retains doorways and windows of ancient pointed architecture.
