NEWARK PRIORY, a quondam Augustinian canon-ry, in Send parish, Surrey; on the river Wey, 2 miles S of Woking. It was founded, in the time of Richard I., by Ruald de Calva and his wife; was called, in the earliest charters, Newsted and de Novo Loco; had, at thedissolution, an annual revenue of £259; was given thento the Brownes; belongs now to Earl Lovelace; and is now represented by a crushed ivy-clad mass of ruins, faintly showing the early English character.
