In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Chadwell like this:
CHADWELL, or Caldwell, a chapelry in Rothley parish, Leicester; near the Salt way, 5 miles NNW of Saxby r. station, and 5 NE of Melton-Mowbray. Post Town, Scalford, under Melton-Mowbray. Acres, 1,730. Pop., 139. Houses, 27. The living is a p. curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Rothley, in the diocese of Peterborough. The church is good, and has a tower.
