Compstone, an estate, with a fine modern mansion, in Twynholm parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, near the right bank of Tarf Water, a little above its confluence with the Dee, 2½ miles N by W of Kirkcudbright. It has long been the property of a branch of the Maitlands, to which belonged the two brothers and eminent Scotch judges, Thomas Maitland, Lord Dundrennan (17921851), and Francis Maitland, Lord Barcaple (1809-70). Its present owner, David Maitland, Esq. of Dundrennan (b. 1848; suc. 1861), holds 2304 acres in the shire, valued at £2145 per annum. In old Compstone Castle, now represented only by three tottering walls of a tower, the soldier-poet, Alexander Montgomery, composed The Cherrie and the Stae (1595).
