Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for OSWESTRY and NEWTOWN railway

OSWESTRY and NEWTOWN railway, a railway system in Salop and Montgomery; comprising amain line, 30 miles long, from Oswestry south-south-westward to Newtown, a branch 1¼ mile long from Llynclys to Porthywaen lime-rocks, branches 15 mileslong from Llanymynech to Llanfyllin, and from Newtownto Kerry, and a branch 4½ miles long from Cilgurgan to Aberbechar. The main line was authorized in 1855, on a capital of £250,000 in shares, and £83,000 in loans, was opened partly in 1860, and entirely in 1861; and wasleased for 10 years to Messrs. Davies and Savin in 1860. The Llynclys and Porthywaen branch was authorized in 1860, on a capital of £10,000 in shares and £3,000 in loans. The branches to Llanfyllin and to Kerry wereauthorized in 1861, on a capital of £90,000 in shares and £30,000 in loans; and were opened in 1863. The branchfrom Cilgurgan to Aberbechar was authorized in 1863, on a capital of £200,000 in shares, and £66,000 in loans. The entire system was incorporated, in 1864, with the Llanidloes and Newtown, the Newtown and Machynlleth, the Oswestry, Ellesmere, and hit church, and the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast, to constitute the Cambrian railway system.
