OXFORD CANAL, a canal in Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, and Oxfordshire. It begins in a junctionwith the Coventry canal at Longford, 3½ miles N N E of Coventry; goes south-eastward, past Anstey, Brinklow, and Newbold, and within 1¼ mile of Rugby, to the boundary with Northamptonshire in the vicinity of Hillmorton; proceeds 3 miles south-south-westward within Northamptonshire; crosses a small wing of Warwickshire and a small wing of Northamptonshire, southward, to Wolfhamcote; goes thence, south-westward and westward, within Warwickshire, to the vicinity of Napton; proceeds thence southward to the vicinity of Priors-Hardwick; crosses another small wing of Northamptonshire, and passes again into Warwickshire, on to the W vicinity of Wormleighton; goes thence southward into thenor thern extremity of Oxfordshire; arrives at the valley of the Cherwell in the vicinity of Cropredy; and goessouthward, down that valley, past Banbury, Clifton, the Astons, the Heyfords, and Kirtlington, to BamptonGray; leaves there the Cherwell to the right; and strikesdirectly southward, past Woolvercot, to the river Isison the W side of Oxford. It was formed in 1769-90. Itis 88 miles long, 28 feet wide, and from 4½ to 6 feet deep; and, by means of 42 locks, it rises 74½ feet and falls 195feet. A branch goes from it at Wolfhamcote to the Grand Junction canal; and a tunnel and a reservoir are at Wormleighton.
