SATCHFIELD-CLIST, a tything in Sowton and Farringdon parishes, Devon; adjacent to Clist, St. Mary. Pop., 286. The manor belonged to the Sackvilles; passed, in the time of Edward I., to the Bishops of Exeter; and was given, by Edward VI., to the Earl of Bedford. A palace of the bishops was here; took afterwardsthe name of Bedford House; was fortified and garrisoned, by Sir T. Fairfax, against Charles I.; and is now called Bishops Court.
