Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Abbey

Abbey, vil., in co. and 1¼ mile E. of Haddington, on river Tyne; here stood a Cistercian nunnery (founded 1178), which was the meeting-place (1548) of the parliament that arranged Queen Mary's marriage with the Dauphin.
