This variable contains the 24 occupational orders used in reporting on the 1881 census, into which the 414 occupation titles listed in the most detailed tabulations were grouped. Note that fifteen of these titles were 'Workers and Dealers in ...', so this classification explicitly mingles workers in manufacturing and in services. We have added a twenty-fifth order, 'Unknown', to cover persons in the enumerators' book data who had an occupation listed but it was either illegible or too obscure to be assigned to any broader category.
