While the 1841 Census of Great Britain made no attempt to classify occupations, and consequently listed occupations for the main towns only, the Irish Census of 1841 constructed a simple 8-way classification organised around different human needs, or "Wants". This enabled the Census to present occupational information for every parish. The same classification was used in 1851.
