This unit was originally considered extra-parochial. Youngs' states it was within the area of St Mary Castlegate ancient parish but not considered within the ancient Borough, MB or CB. Prior to 1881 the unit has its own entry in the census listings. The 1881 and 1891 Census both have a note to indicate its figures are included with St Mary Castlegate.
