From 1851 onwards, for statistical purposes we define the Registration County of Middlesex to exclude those Registration Districts listed in census and vital registration reports as being within "the Metropolis", i.e. London. However, the reports of the Poor Law Board up to 1st January 1857 do not distinguish London, so the Middlesex data include those areas.
