In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Saxstead like this:
SAXTEAD, a parish, with a village, in Hoxne district, Suffolk; on the river Alde, 2½ miles N W of Framlingham r. station. It has a post-office under Wickham-Market. Acres, 1, 202. Real property, £2, 420. Pop., 448. Houses, 100. The living is a p. curacy, annexed to Framlingham, in the diocese of Norwich. The church is good.
