In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Eaglesfield like this:

EAGLESFIELD, a township in Brigham parish, Cumberland: 2¾ miles SW of Cockermouth. Real property, £2, 491. Pop., 304. Houses, 64. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Dalton, the chemist, was a native.
