In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Bryher like this:
BREHAR, or Bryther, one of the Scilly island; in the NW of the group, 21/2 miles NW of Hugh-Town. It is two miles long, rugged, wild, and high; and inhabited chiefly by firemen. It contains some Druidical remains. Pop., 119
