In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rathfarnham like this:

Rathfarnham, par. and vil., in co. and 3 miles S. of Dublin, on river Dodder - par., 2784 ac., pop. 7663; vil., pop. (with Ponds) 746; P.O., T.O. In this neighbourhood are many handsome seats and villas, also several paper and corn mills. Rathfarnham Castle, an old seat, was formerly the property of the Marquis of Ely.
