In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described How Mill like this:
HOW mill, a railway station in Cumberland; on the Newcastle and Carlisle railway, 10¾ miles E of Carlisle. Hayton church is close to it; and the white turrets of Edmond Castle, the seat of T. H. Graham, Esq., are seen in the distance.
