In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Deptford like this:

DEPTFORD, a tything in Wylye parish, Wilts; 6½ miles SE of Heytesbury. Pop., 87. An inn here is the half-way house between Salisbury and Warminster; and the garden of it commands a fine view.
