In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Fountains Abbey like this:
Fountains Abbey (1132), monastic ruin, in par. and 3 miles SW. of Ripon, E. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, within Studley Park; in W. vicinity of the abbey is the seat of Fountains Hall.
