In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Mosedale like this:

MOSEDALE, a glen in the SW of Cumberland; descending about 2 miles southward, from the E side of Ennerdale Pillar, to the vicinity of the head of Wat water; and flanked, on the E side, by Kirk fell,-on the W side, by Yewbarrow.
