In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described How Hall like this:

HOW-HALL, a seat on Ennerdale water, in Cumberland; 6½ miles NE of Egremont. It belonged to the Patricksons, and passed to the Senhouses; and it commands a full view of nearly all the lake.
