In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pollokshaws like this:
Pollokshaws, police burgh and ry. sta., Eastwood par., Renfrewshire, on river White Cart, in SW. suburbs of Glasgow, pop. 9363; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks; has cotton factories, bleachfields, printworks, papermills, and iron foundries.
