In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ewes like this:

Ewes, pastoral par., E. Dumfries-shire, 24,941 ac., pop. 337; the church stands on Ewes Water, 4 miles N. of Langholm.

The location is that of Ewes church, beside Ewes Water.
