In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Muirkirk like this:

Muirkirk, town and par., E. Ayrshire - par., 3029 ac., pop. 5123; town, on river Ayr, 26 miles E. by N. of Ayr, 50 miles SW. of Edinburgh, and 58 miles SE. of Glasgow by rail, pop. 3470; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; abounds in coal, ironstone, and limestone, and is the seat of an extensive iron manufacture.
