In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lilliesleaf like this:

Lilliesleaf, par. and vil., Roxburghshire - par., 6673 ac., pop. 718; vil., 3 miles W. of Belses sta. and 6 miles SW. of St Boswells sta.; P.O., T.O.; is charmingly situated on Ale Water, and is much frequented by artists; Lilliesleaf Moor was a resort of the Covenanters.
