In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Westerkirk like this:

Westerkirk, par., Dumfriesshire, on river Esk, 26,992 ac., pop. 478; the church is 6 miles NW. of Langholm. Thomas Telford (1757-1834), the celebrated engineer, was a native.
