In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Balmerino like this:
Balmerino, par. and vil., on Firth of Tay, N. Fifeshire, 3½ miles SW. of Dundee by water. 3431 ac., pop. 664; has remains of an abbey of the 13th century; post-town, Newport.
