In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Salton like this:

SALTON, a township in Helmsley district, and a parish partly also in Malton district, N. R. Yorkshire. The township lies on the river Dore, 3½ miles N by E of Slingsby r. station, and 6½ W S W of Pickering; and has a post-office under York. Acres, 1, 730. Real property, £2, 940. Pop., 169. Houses, 28. The parish contains also the township of Brawby, and comprises 2, 530 acres. Pop., 384. Houses, 70. The manor belongs to J. Wood-all, Esq. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York. Value, £140. Patron, J. Woodall, Esq.
