Ilchester  Somerset

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ilchester like this:

Ilchester, par. and vil., mid. Somerset, on river Yeo, 5 miles NW. of Yeovil, 653 ac., pop. 683; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Wednesday. Ilchester is of ancient origin, and was at one time the chief town in Somerset. It was the birthplace of Roger Bacon (1214-1292), Franciscan monk and philosopher, and gives the title of earl to family of Fox Strangways.
