In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Grace Dieu like this:
GRACEDIEU PARK, an extra-parochial tract in the district and county of Monmouth; 4½ miles W by S of Monmouth. A small Cistertian abbey was founded here, in 1226, by John of Monmouth.
