Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. The polygons, area names and identifiers, and the 2011 population count were supplied by DG-REGIO of the European Commission, but are obviously UK census information. The population counts from earlier censuses were added by us by redistricting population counts held in the other tables in this section.

Notes:

  1. All redistrcting operations are held in the script which builds this table. Note that more complex redistrcting methods had to be developed by Michael Stoner to correct for differences between the boundary data of different dates which led to substantial numbers being 'redistricted into the sea'.
  2. The EU's preference was for counts of 'Usually Resident', but this was definitely not available for 1961 and appears not to be computable for 1971. We therefore included both 'Persons Present' and 'Usually Resident' whereever possible.
  3. Boundary data for 1971 are particularly problematic, being Thiessen polygons built around estimated enumeration district centroids, and some areas were completely missing. This included Walney Island, part of Barrow in Furness, where all EDs within the two 2011 wards were completely missing, and consequently received no population. This was handled by directly specifying the populations of thee two areas, based on earlier calculations by us at ward level.

Checking:

  1. The original data supplied by the EU were not checked. Various checks were made on the redistricted data we added, including ensuring that all 2011 wards had SOME population assigned to them, and that the summed redistricted populations for all wards put together were as close as possible to the totals of the un-redistricted data.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
g_seq Integer number. Sequence number keeping data in original order.
ons_code Text string (max.len.=18). Ward ID number as defined by ONS.
ward_name Text string (max.len.=84). Name of ward, as supplied.
nuts3_code Text string (max.len.=9). NUTS identifier for local authority containing the ward.
ward_area float8 Area of ward in square meters, calculated by us from the polygon.
decade_max_growth Floating point number. Holds 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 or 2000, as a numeric value, depending on which intercensal period had the highest rate of increase in population.
pop_1951_present Floating point number. Persons present within ward in 1951, based on redistricting 1961 census data.
pop_1961_present Floating point number. Persons present within ward in 1961, based on redistricting 1961 census data.
pop_1971_present Floating point number. Persons present within ward in 1971, based on 'Population Present'.
pop_1971_usu_res Floating point number. This would contain persons usually resident, but it is unclear whether this can be computed from available 1971 data.
pop_1981_present Floating point number. Persons present within ward in 1981, based on 'All present residents' and 'All visitors'.
pop_1981_usu_res Floating point number. Persons usually resident within ward in 1981, based on 'All present residents' and 'All absent residents'.
pop_1991_present Floating point number. Persons present within ward in 1991, based on 'Present residents' and 'Visitors'.
pop_1991_usu_res Floating point number. Persons usually resident within ward in 1991, based on 'Present residents' and [one definition of absent residents].
pop_2001_usu_res Floating point number. Population of the ward in 2001, as computed by us by redistricting data for individual Output Areas.
pop_2011_usu_res Floating point number. Population of the ward in 2011, as supplied by the EU.
g_foot_etrs geometry Boundary polgon, as supplied by the EU. There was actually a hole in their data, but we fixed it.
pc_growth_51_61 Floating point number. Percentage difference between persons present in 1951 and 1961.
pc_growth_61_71 Floating point number. Percentage difference between persons present in 1961 and 1971.
pc_growth_71_81 Floating point number. Percentage difference between persons present in 1971 and 1981.
pc_growth_81_91 Floating point number. Percentage difference between persons usually resident in 1981 and 1991.
pc_growth_91_01 Floating point number. Percentage difference between persons usually resident in 1991 and 2001.
pc_growth_01_11 Floating point number. Percentage difference between persons usually resident in 2001 and 2011.
decade_max_decline Floating point number. Holds 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 or 2000, as a numeric value, depending on which intercensal period had the highest rate of decline in population, but null if the ward population increased in all decades.
