Sources:

  1. This table was transcribed from table 5 in the county reports of the 1951 census, 'Persons Resident in one area and working in another area'.

Notes:

  1. This transcription is partial because it only covers certain counties. However, those counties do contain all information given in the oriignal table. Where counties are complete they include all the Local Government districts within that particular county. These were all input by Harold Price at Portsmouth.
    • Completed counties currently include:
    • Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Suffolk all added in autumn 2015
    • Lincolnshire, London, Middlesex, Northumberland, Northamptonshire, Soke of Peterborough and Nottinghamshire all added in Spring 2018.
    • Partially completed counties currently include:
    • Leicestershire and Oxfordshire which were added in Spring 2018
  2. This data relates to England and Wales only.
  3. The original table in the report comprised three columns, one for the location information and one for each gender. The location information column identifies the county and then lists all the local government districts within that county. For each local government district it lists firstly the relationships between places where people are resident in the local government district and working in a different district/county, and secondly people working in that local government district and living in a different district/county. To clarify the table and make it easier to manipulate the county name has been added as an additional first column and the local government district being reported on as an additional second column. Further columns have been added to separate out the county and place with which there is a relationship.
  4. A third additional column identifies whether the statistics relate to either
    • residents who worked outside the district as RESIDENT
    • or
    • people who worked within the district, but were resident elsewhere as WORKING
  5. The matching to the auo is incomplete. These non-matches include:
    • Rows where the rel to unit being matched is within a different county to the county given in the row
    • Rows where the rel to unit relates to a total
    • Rows where the rel to unit is a county but not an admin county which is identified by its preferred name, either because it was subdivided for instance East and West Sussex recorded simply as Sussex, or the preferred name is different e.g. Durham rather than County Durham

Checking:

  1. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  2. No checking of the numbers given for each pair of units between resident LGD and working LGD and vice versa has yet been attempted to check the accuracy of data input.
