Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for NORRIS CASTLE

NORRIS CASTLE, a seat on the N coast of the Isle of Wight; 1 mile E by N of East Cowes. It was erectedby Lord Henry Seymour, after designs by Wyatville; it gave entertainment, in 1819, to George IV.; it was the occasional residence of the Duchess of Kent and of Queen Victoria when Princess; it was again occupied by the Duchess of Kent, after Queen Victoria's accession to the throne; it is now the seat of R. Bell, Esq.; it commands a magnificent view of the Solent, from Portsmouth to Calshot Castle; and, with lofty ivy-clad towers and long battlemented front, it presents a picturesque appearance from the water.
