OAKOVER, or Okeover, a parish in the district of Ashborne and county of Stafford; on the river Dove at the boundary with Derbyshire, 2 miles N W of Ashborne r. station. Post-town, Ashborne. Acres, 810. Real property, £1, 381. Pop., 61. Houses, 11. Oakover House is the seat of H.Oakover, Esq.; was built on the site of a former mansion, the seat of Mr. Os. ancestors; contains Raphael's " Holy Family, " which was hidden under a floor during the civil wars of Charles I.; and contains also paintings by Titian,Dolci, Rubens, and Vandervelde. The parish contains Hallsteds barrow, and Arbour-close Roman camp; and is a meet for Yates'harriers. The living is a donative in the diocese of Lichfield. Value, £20. Patron, H.Oakover, Esq. The church is old and ivy-clad, and contains a triple canopied brass of an Oakover of 1520.
