Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for DURHAM (Old)

DURHAM (Old), a place in the district and county of Durham; on the river Wear, ¾ of a mile E of Durham city. It is the site of an ancient Saxon town; and stands opposite the Roman station Maiden-castle, where Roman altars have been found.
