Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for FREEMANTLE

FREEMANTLE, a chapelry in Millbrook parish, Hants; on Southampton water, and on the Southampton and Dorchester railway, 2 miles WNW of Southampton. It has a post office under Southampton. Pop., about 4, 000. The living is a rectory in the dio. of Winchester. Value, £410. The church was built in 1865; and is in the decorated English style, and cruciform. Free-mantle House here was a retreat of the poet Cowper, in his early years; and was the residence of Gen. Sir. G. H. Hewitt, Bart. The estate around it has been laid out for building purposes.
