GUESTLING, a village, a parish, and a hundred in Sussex. The village stands 1¼ mile E of the Ashford and Hastings railway, 2 from the coast, and 3½ NE of Hastings; is partly situated on an acclivity, commanding fine views; consists of numerous detached houses and villas; and has a post office, of the name of Guestling Green, under Hastings. The parish is in Hastings district, and comprises 3, 564 acres. Real property, £4, 212. Pop., 731. Houses, 154. The property is much subdivided. Broomham is an ancient seat of the Ashburnhams, and stands amid a richly wooded park. Maxfield is an old timbered house, and was the birthplace of G. Martin, translator of the Rheims version of the Bible. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester. Value, £450.* Patron, Clare College, Cambridge. The church is early English, with some Norman features; h as a low tower, with short spire; and contains monuments of the Ashburnhams; and it stands on an eminence.
