Swale, river, North-Riding Yorkshire; rises on mountains at boundary of Westmorland, 4 miles SE. of Kirkby Stephen, and flows E. and SE., past Muker and Richmond, to the Ure 1 mile E. of Aldborough; is 60 miles long, and is navigable for 8 miles above its junction with the Ure.
