Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Unst

Unst, island and par., in the extreme N. of Shetland - par. (comprising the islands of Muckle Flugga, Unst, and Uyea), 29,856 ac., pop. 2181; island, pop. 2173; P.O., T.O., at Baltasound, 43 miles NE. of Lerwick. The island is 12½ miles long, and from 2½ to 6 miles broad. The coast is much indented, and the headlands, especially in the N. and W., are rocky and precipitous. The surface is moderately level, and in the S. attains a maximum alt. of 703 ft. Much of the soil is excellent, and produces good crops. Fishing affords the chief employment. Shetland hosiery is the staple mfr.
