Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Uist, North

Uist, North, island and par., Outer Hebrides, Inverness-shire - par., 75,431 ac., pop. 4264; island, pop. 3371; P.O., T.O., at Lochmaddy, 65 miles SW. of Stornoway; the par. also comprises the islands of Baleshare and Illeray, Boveray, Grimisay, Heisker, Levera, Kirkibost, Mhorgay, Monach, Ronay, and Vallay; the island measures, N. and S., 17 miles in length, and from 3 to 13 miles in breadth, and consists chiefly of flat marshy moorland, traversed by a range of hills, the greatest alt. being 1133 ft. The coast is much indented, and the sea-lochs abound with fish.
