Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Rayleigh (or Raleigh)

Rayleigh (or Raleigh), par. and vil., Essex, 4½ miles W. of Rochford, 2906 ac., pop. 1327; P.O., T.O.; gives the title of baron to the family of Strutt; at the upper end of the vil. is a moated mound, the site of Sweyn's castle.
