Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Accrington

Accrington, mun. bor., Whalley par., NE. Lancash., 22 miles N. of Manchester and 209 miles NW. of London by rail, on banks of river Hinburn, 3425 ac. (17 water), pop. 31,435; is an important seat of the cotton-printing trade, with numerous cotton-mills, bleaching works, and extensive collieries in the vicinity; 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. In 1878 Old and New Accrington were incorporated under the name of Accrington.
