Variable : Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain categories

Variables serve as the dimensions of nCubes, and are generally based on the questions on forms such as the census schedule. However, in the aggregate data held in the Vision of Britain system we do not store the individual responses but counts of the number of each kind of response, so variables are made up of categories, such as age groups.

Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain categories

Variable (V)
Text:
These categories were used by the summary statistics published by the Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain, based in the 1930s at the London School of Economics and directed by Professor L. Dudley Stamp. They are identical to the categories used in the actual field surveys of the LUSGB, and the detailed notes on individual categories draw on the Instruction Leaflet used by schools taking part in the survey. Note that for Vision of Britain we group together Stamp's 'Arable' and 'Permanent Grass' categories into a single 'Farmland' category, and then break this down as a separate variable to simplify comparisons with the Agricultural Census.
