nCube : Population totals for computing welfare rates

nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables. For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of death, or just one.

Here we hold a variety of population totals enabling numbers of persons receiving different categories of welfare benefits to be expressed as appropriate rates. These population totals are computed from the reports of the Census of Population, but need to be held for the dates of the welfare counts; in the case of the Poor Law system, this means the 1st of January and the 1st of July in each year. The data have therefore been interpolated using statistics from the censuses before and after the welfare reporting date.

Population totals for computing welfare rates: Data map listing

Each of our datasets, or nCubes, combines one or more variables (Var) each of which consists of a set of categories. The data map lists all the possible combinations of categories. The cell references are the identifiers held in our main table of statistics, recording what each number measures.

Cell Reference Var Category Value
WELFARE_POP:total 1 Total population
WELFARE_POP:ab_males 1 Able-bodied males
